If you’ve ever tried to take a private commuter bus into New York City, you’ve likely run into the same frustrating problem: you can find a schedule, and you can find a list of stop names, but you can’t find an actual map.
Most private carriers like Rockland Coaches, Suburban Transit, and ShortLine expect you to already know which street corner the bus pulls up to and where exactly they run. They don't provide any maps, just a listing of where they go. If they do provide a map, it's just a literal unhelpful line running from NYC to a city, then to another city.
What if you actually needed to research where these buses go? If you found yourself asking "Where exactly IS Jackson, NJ?" "Does a private carrier bus go there?" or "I'm going on vacation to this area in NJ, but there isn't a train stop there. Is there a bus that goes there?" These bus companies are simply notoriously bad for research or anyone who isn't a resident who "already knows" where and when and how to get these buses.
While the MTA and NJ Transit have clear digital maps, private carriers remain a "black box" of transit data. I have aggregated and mapped the stop locations for the private lines that terminate in New York City so you can see exactly where the rubber meets the road.
